The Role of the Sponsor

  • Model how a person of faith lives in today’s world
  • Give witness to the maturing faith of the candidate
  • Be a guide, a confidant, and a listener
  • Be a learner who is interested in personal growth as she/he walks the faith journey with the candidate
  • Be one who will continue after Confirmation to walk the faith journey with the candidate and invite him/her into fuller participation in parish life and service
  • Attend as many of the Service projects and other calendar events with the Confirmandi if possible, especially the Candidate/Sponsor dinner
  • Attend the Confirmation rehearsal
  • Complete the Sponsor Form that requires information on your Baptism and Confirmation and your current Parish, this is provided by the Confirmation candidate.

Requirements of a Sponsor
Canon Law {872-874} states:  To be permitted to take on the function of sponsor a person must be designated by the candidate; completed the 16th year of life; be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist; one who leads a life of faith in keeping with the Church; they should not be bound by canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared and they should not be the father or mother of the child. A sponsor also helps the person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism/confirmation and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it.
